EA Announces Apex Legends 2.0 to Revitalize Underperforming Battle Royale

As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA has acknowledged the game's underperformance in terms of revenue, despite maintaining a substantial player base. During a recent financial call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson revealed that while Apex Legends boasts over 200 million players, its financial trajectory hasn't met expectations. While the game continues to receive updates and new content, the results haven't been as significant as hoped.

To address this, EA is developing a major update dubbed "Apex Legends 2.0," aiming to reinvigorate the franchise and attract new players. This update is intended to significantly improve the game's financial performance.

However, the release of Apex Legends 2.0 is strategically planned to avoid overlapping with the launch of the next Battlefield title, anticipated before April 2026. Therefore, Apex Legends 2.0 is projected to launch sometime during EA's 2027 fiscal year (ending March 2027).

Wilson emphasized EA's long-term commitment to the Apex Legends franchise, highlighting its potential to endure for decades, similar to other successful EA titles. He confirmed that Apex Legends 2.0 won't be the final iteration of the game, suggesting continued development and updates to maintain player engagement and attract new audiences. The company plans to continue investing in the core community and expand the game's appeal to broader player demographics.

The planned overhaul of Apex Legends echoes Activision's approach with Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. While the success of that reboot remains debated, EA will undoubtedly learn from the experiences of its competitors in the battle royale market.

Despite its current financial struggles, Apex Legends continues to rank among the top-played games on Steam, although its concurrent player count is significantly below its peak and trending downwards.
