These five cards form a cycle, each representing one of Magic's colors, and they share a common design theme. They are all low-cost, common-rarity creatures with abilities linked to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans, and another feature that converts mana into a color from that clan.

“Three-color limited environments need substantial mana fixing at all rarities,” explains Adam Prosak, Senior Game Designer at Wizards of the Coast. “We aimed to ensure many decks could access mana fixing, so we developed numerous designs to address this. These creatures allow players to play to the board while simultaneously developing their mana - a significant advantage over other designs like tapped lands, which only generate mana and can cause you to fall behind in the game.”

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond notes that while the mechanical design of this cycle was prioritized, common cards often serve as a canvas to illustrate the world of the set. This time, it's about showcasing the unique aspects of the clans since their last appearance. “From the action-oriented Jeskai monks to the Temur using Whispers magic, the protective and vengeful Sultai Nagas, the varied military roles within the Mardu, and the Abzan clerics focused on regrowing lost kin trees, each clan has evolved in fascinating ways.”

Some fans have critiqued recent Magic sets for leaning too heavily on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting established planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out with its direct and authentic approach to returning to Tarkir. Forrest Schehl, Senior Worldbuilding Art Director, acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast. “The core concept for Tarkir was set well before Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent sets were released, and it remained unchanged,” he explains. “We aimed to blend Dragons and Clans in a novel way, with Dragonstorms playing a central role in our design. Lauren and I felt the pressure to do justice to this beloved plane from the start, ensuring we crafted the next chapter with both authenticity and substance.”

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with the set's official release slated for April 11 in both physical and digital formats, and in-store prerelease events beginning on April 4.
