2XKO Unleashes Tag-Team Revolution

by Aria Jan 09,2025

Riot Games' 2XKO (formerly Project L) is poised to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This highly anticipated title offers a unique take on 2v2 combat, setting it apart from traditional tag fighters. Let's explore its innovative features and the recently concluded playable demo.

Reimagining Tag Team Combat

2XKO's Innovative Tag Team Mechanics

2XKO's Duo Play system, showcased at EVO 2024, allows two players to control a single team, resulting in thrilling 2v2 showdowns (or even 2v1 matches!). Each team consists of a Point character and an Assist character, each controlled by a different player. The tag system incorporates three key mechanics:

  • Assist Actions: The Point character can summon the Assist for special moves.
  • Handshake Tag: A quick swap between Point and Assist roles.
  • Dynamic Save: The Assist can interrupt enemy combos to save their partner.

Unlike some tag fighters where a single knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both players on a team to be defeated. Even defeated champions remain active as Assists, providing strategic support. Matches are designed to be longer and more strategic than typical fighting game encounters.

2XKO's Character Selection and Fuses

Beyond standard character customization, 2XKO introduces "Fuses"—synergy options impacting gameplay. The demo featured five Fuses:

  • PULSE: Rapid attacks for devastating combos.
  • FURY: Increased damage and dash cancel below 40% health.
  • FREESTYLE: Allows two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
  • 2X ASSIST: Grants the Assist character multiple assist actions.

Game designer Daniel Maniago highlights the Fuse system's role in enhancing player expression and enabling powerful coordinated attacks.

2XKO's Playable Characters

The demo featured six playable champions: Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi, each reflecting their League of Legends counterparts. While Jinx and Katarina were absent from this Alpha Lab Playtest, their inclusion in future updates has been confirmed.

Alpha Lab Playtest and Beyond

2XKO joins the free-to-play fighting game arena, launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025. The Alpha Lab Playtest, running August 8-19, is currently accepting registrations.
