Ōkami 2 Confirmed to Be a Direct Sequel, Still in Early Development

by Hazel Feb 21,2025

The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally shed a little light on its development. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads revealed some crucial information.

Firstly, the sequel is confirmed as a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline. Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi explicitly stated it's a "continuation of the story that we saw in the original game." Director Hideki Kamiya's cryptic response to whether Amaterasu would return was cleverly followed by Hirabayashi's confirmation that she indeed is the main protagonist.

PlayWhile this confirms fan expectations, the team also addressed the existence of Ōkamiden, the Nintendo DS prequel starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Hirabayashi acknowledged mixed fan reception to Ōkamiden, citing concerns about its storyline and the absence of key original team members. He clarified that the new sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's narrative.

The original Ōkami's ending provides a natural springboard for a sequel, leaving Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey. This leaves ample room for new challenges and adventures.

However, fans will have to exercise patience. The team confirmed the sequel is in its very early stages of development, explaining the early announcement was driven by pure excitement. Hirabayashi indicated that further updates might be some time coming.
